Requirements for joining the American Legion

Eligibility

An individual is eligible for membership in The American Legion only if the individual:

  1. Has served in the Armed Forces of the United States at any time during the period of April 6, 1917, through November 11, 1918; or any time after December 7, 1941 through to the present day;
  2. And was honorably discharged or separated from that service or is currently serving honorably.

U.S. Merchant Marine eligible only from December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946.

Must have served at least one day of active military duty during one of these dates plus have been honorably discharged or still serving honorably.

New Membership

Eligible veterans applying for first time membership must mail the following information to the Post’s Adjutant at American Legion Post 1995, PO Box 550, Long Beach MS 39560 OR leave it with the bartender at the VFW Post at 213 Klondyke Road:

  1. Membership Application. Use either the online Membership Application. OR pick up a paper application at the VFW Hall.
  2. A copy of your DD214 or DISCHARGE PAPERS
  3. Membership Dues ($40 for 2023-24). Make checks payable to American Legion Post 1995.  DO NOT MAIL CASH.  Cash is OK if you leave the paperwork with the VFW bartender.

Transfer your Membership

Veterans wishing to transfer from their current Post to our Post must submit the following to the Post Adjutant:

  1. Membership Application. Use either the online Membership Application. Or pick up a paper application at the VFW Hall.
  2. A copy of your DD214 or DISCHARGE PAPERS
  3. A copy of your membership card
  4. Membership Dues ($40) if you have not already paid for 2023-24. Make checks payable to American Legion Post 1995.  DO NOT MAIL CASH.  Cash is OK if you leave the paperwork with the VFW bartender.
